A most forgiving ape
-Alan Moorehead
 Summary:
The essay is mainly a narration of how the author managed to closely observe the gorilla in its wild state in Central Africa. The purpose of this essay is to warn the world that the gorilla which is the most forgiving ape is facing the danger of extinction due to ignorance of their significance to the earth.

The author begins with the issue of how the gorillas have been defamed and disfigured. Different earlier researchers, explorers, journals, adventures, films, etc had done nothing more than establishing the stereotyped image of this ape as a ferocious animal. These are simply the outcome of subtle observations over the gorillas.

Though Carl Akeley, the American naturalist made an endeavor to divulge the truth about the gorillas, his hard luck caused the failure along with him and his crew's death under the volcano. So it remained mystery as it was when Du Chaillu first saw this creature. This mystery can be related to that of the mountaineer's search for the Yeti. The author presents the brief account of gorilla in various aspects before he comes to describe his exciting encounter with the gorilla. Before that he has managed to provide with the research done by other people.

Sir Julian Huxley observed the intelligence level of gorilla describing the 18 months old gorilla tracing the outline of his own shadow, the artistic initiative which is hardly found in other animals. Likewise, the male gorillas are physically strong and they provide security to their family.

The author while giving the short account of Miss Doinsthrope exploration in Mahavura area accuses her of giving false facts on gorillas, describing them as a violent and belligerent animal. I fact it isn't as belligerent as she describes. The word "forgiving" brings out precisely the basic nature of gorilla.

The author as a part of safari to gorilla sanctuary was not expecting to see gorilla in wildlife state as it was his first attempt. They (author and his crew) carried out their research by achieving new feat every day.

The main credit for the success of the crew goes to the two guides who possessed all the qualities that an expert guide should have. They reach to the forbidden nest of the gorillas. The author wants to try on it, but he lacks the energy, plus the nest was untidy. So they move on until they were hinted the presence of the gorillas by the guides to keep silence. And then comes the nightmare like strange high pitched scream. The whole crew was excited to see a huge and glowing black male gorilla in his mighty posture. The author distinguishes this ape from other animals on the basis of his intuitive desire to meet and know the gorilla. Unlike other wild animals, the author doesn't feel like running away from the gorilla. The gorilla is not savage and hostile. It is like us. Of course, they are our ancestors. Thanks to Darwin. There exists a sense of recognition that doesn't frighten us.

The author and his crew were so excited at that situation that he considered it a waste of time to grab the binoculars to see the gorilla. Nothing was better than observing gorilla in natural and whole. This encounter with gorilla provided him with the enthusiasm and energy.

This is to be noted that by presenting to the reader a charming looking, forgiving animal with some human qualities, the author isn't trying to entertain us, but pointing out that this rare species are still being butchered but Tribesmen and so, effective measures must be taken to protect this rare and lovely animal.
