Systems approach to Human Resource Management

It’s the human beings that make up an organization; not the concrete buildings.

Other approaches to management studied HRM in fragmented way, which didn’t provide comprehensive view of the organization. They ignored the relationship of the organization and its resources with its external environment. As a result, system theory emerged as a general approach to understand organization as a whole system.

HRM responsibilities change as society changes. Today, public organizations are facing serious economic changes, changes in the legal environment, and socio-cultural, generational, and educational changes. Under systems approach, these changes and challenges are identified to develop effective Human resource strategies to address them.

Contribution of Systems Approach:
·         Integrative and holistic view of organization
·         Recognizes the interrelation and interaction among sub-systems for synergetic effects
·         Recognizes the environmental influence
·         Useful for big and complex organizations
·         Feedback facilitates changes in system. Prevents entropy.

Limitations:
·         Complex for practical application
·         Not so relevant for small organizations
·         Too abstract; infeasible
·       Doesn’t provide specific guidance on the functions and duties of managers.
