he 18th SAARC Summit is going to be held at Kathmandu, Nepal on 26-27 November, 2014. I could go on writing about the formal programs and schedules of the officials and guests which will be attended during the Summit… but who am I kidding to!? That information is available on other sites and media too.

Let me give you a new taste on this 18th SAARC Summit.

Hardly have Nepal ever experienced such a huge infrastructure development budget expenditure (or utilization) than this time during pre-SAARC. Government of Nepal has been successful at stunning its people with the rapid and overnight change of the Kathmandu valley during these months. And I am sure, even the Indian premier, Narendra Modi, will be swept of his feet when he can’t recognize the capital city, because even we Nepalese couldn’t believe our eyes. Good work, Government!

Before, the pavements around the Ring Road area of Tribhuvan Int’l Airport were like ghettos. But, as the date of SAARC approached, the scenario has changed. Not only that, but other several main city areas have benefitted from this SAARC Summit preparation. Solar lights have been installed in most part of the main city. Holes on the roads have been patched. Trees have been planted. And many other things… just take a walk around and inside the city, and see for yourself.

Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has come up with a kickass strategy for traffic management during this SAARC Summit. ‘Odd-even license plate system’ is being implemented from November 24 to November 28. That means, on ‘even dates’ only even number plates can roll, and for ‘odd dates’, may the odds be on your side. This will surprisingly reduce the traffic volume in the valley by 50%, theoretically, and in practical, almost 40%. However, such odd-even system will not be imposed on ambulances, fire brigades, tourist buses.

Looking at such an astounding rate of infrastructure development in Kathmandu, it seems like that we can even prepare to host the FIFA World Cup too. All we need is the realization among the authorities and governments to do so. We hope that this utilization of fund isn’t limited to SAARC Summit preparation.

May God Bless Us.
