etter late than never, the UNO has finally green-signaled to June 21 as the World Yoga Day. This is a good thing. This Day is expected to contribute significantly to the expansion of various dimensions of Yoga throughout the globe.

Homer says, "D'oh... Om!"
Nepal is the land of wonders. Great many souls have lived here and purged this land—from Janak and Buddha—to many Saints like Gorakhnath, Nagarjuna and Shivapuri. Hence, the World Yoga Day naturally means much to us Nepalese. This can be the most suitable way to heal the wounds and get their lives back to normal with physical and mental well-being affected by April 25 Earthquake.

Many people still don’t have a clear understanding of what Yoga is all about. In fact, Yoga is a “Super-science”, or say the “Universal Science”. It plays a crucial role so as to bring about peace, humanity, brotherhood, and worldwide cooperation. No doubt that the physical/material development has reached the apex, but there’s still fear among people; they are uncomfortable with their life; they are deprived of inner peace. People today, like they always had been, want to be at comfort and they want peace and love. The only way out to channel-in this positive energy in life is through Yoga and Meditation.  Yoga maintains balance in person’s body, thoughts, and feelings, thus leading to the Integrated Personality Development. Therefore, Yoga is the branch of knowledge that guides us to lead our life as a complete human being.

The world today is divided by the walls of religions. The instances of religious-intolerance are leading the society towards conflict, violence, and war. In this context where the humanity is eroding, Yoga plays the central role in strengthening the feeling of brotherhood in the world. Irrespective of the religion you follow and the prejudice that you hold, everyone is free to practice Yoga, Pranayanm, and Meditation.  Through this we can experience the abstract and sophisticated “High-matter” within ourselves. Yoga is an open-science free to all. There’s no any condition to practice it. Yoga and meditation is the only bridge that can bring together the world divided into pieces in the name of ethnicity, religions, regional conflicts, wars, and misunderstandings.

In order to make their work even more productive and energetic, the professionals like doctors, engineers, teachers, officers, journalists, and Army and Police can resort to Yoga without second-guessing. This enhances their work performance and efficiency too. It should also be applied in schools, colleges, and various other professional institutions through simplification. This can contribute to the building of peaceful and prosperous societies through the generation of energetic, productive and optimistic human resources.
This is the age of “Cutting and Science Technology”. The materialistic progress is heading towards climax as a result of miraculous advancement and achievements in Science and Technology. But this development has come at price—there is a dark side to it. In order to direct the scientific developments in the right direction, it calls for the cooperative balance between materialism and spirituality so that people can live a healthy life. But without the right practice of Yoga, Meditation and Pranayam, healthy life is a forbidden fruit. Albert Einstein must have realized the truth that thus he said, “Science and Spirituality are complementary to each other. Spiritualism without science is blind; science without spiritualism is crippled.”

Knowledge speaks; wisdom listens. Yielding to the lack of prudent direction of scientific and technological development, the human civilization has already faced the two great inhumane World Wars. God knows how many wars will take place in future. In relation to this, Yoga can act as liaison to coordinate the knowledge of science and spirituality so as to make this world a better place to live in. Therefore, the relevancy of Yoga is evergreen like it was yesterday, and that will continue in future too.

Mankind has brutally raped the nature. Nothing is exception to pollution. The water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the sun light we absorb… everything! When people consume these materials, they yield to bad physical and mental health. Weak physique, negative thoughts and feelings begin to take over. Consequently, the person will lose his or her balance in life which paves the way for stress, schizophrenia, and depression. The five physical constituents of life, viz. Earth, water, air, fire, and… are affected by the reckless human activities which have caused the problems in societies. In this plight, Yoga, Meditation, and Pranayam can be the most suitable way to purge the society from all its sufferings.

Nepalese society is still in transitional phase, and the Earthquake of April 25 has added to it. Fear still lingers here. Besides Kathmandu valley, massive loss of lives and properties has been accounted in Sindupalchowk, Dolakha, Gorkha, Dhading, Nuwakot, and other districts. The people there have to face the tragic loss of their relatives’ lives. They are worried about how they will face the ‘rainy’ days to come, literally. Mere distribution of relief materials doesn’t do much than sustaining their lives. Living is different from survival. In this context, Yoga and meditation can be applied to reduce the mental stress in people. It’s necessary to teach them the art of coping with the disasters, and the art of living so that their confidence can be elevated that enables them to do something significant for their future generations.

Journalism—the profession I am in—is a very demanding one. Like journalism, there are several other ones where one needs to work day and nights. Such working situations can impact on the person’s daily life. That’s why I feel that Yoga and Meditation is a powerful weapon to cut through everyday challenges in life. Ever since 2000 when I first participated in Bipashyana Meditation 10-days seminar, I have been constantly practicing meditation till date. I don’t think there is any other better and effective alternative than Meditation to make our daily life balanced, peaceful, creative, comfortable, and stress-free.

This World Yoga Day can be a good start for everyone to start a new healthy life by detoxifying this obviously intoxicated body of ours and go through life-long mental-spiritual journey. So now come on, let’s make a resolution today to allocate at least 30 minute every morning and evening for Yoga, Meditation and Pranayam and start the journey of Yoga.

It’s okay to be Smart and Healthy.
