This is the
ultimate “Group of Death” in this Euro Cup 2020 (2021). With the heavyweights
like France, Germany, and Portugal, as well as Hungary in the same Group F, the
tournament is already on fire. It’s the most legit “Group of Death” in the Euro
Cup ever. Following the match between France and Germany on 16 June 2021, where
France beat Deutschland by 1-0, Germany is yet to test their Euro Fate today
with the defending Euro Champion—Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal. Let’s call this Euro
Cup 2020—Portugal vs. Germany the Ultimate Death Game of this Group of Death.
Change my mind!
Euro Cup 2020 Recap
The opening match of Group F took
place between Portugal and Hungary on 15 June 2021. With a 3-0 win against
Hungary, Cristiano Ronaldo set the milestone as the all-time top scorer (11
goals) in the EURO while being the first player to feature in the 5 Euro
Editions. Plus, Cristiano Ronaldo’s preference for Agua, or water over Coca-Cola during the pre-match press conference led to a $4 billion drop in market value
of Coca-Cola. Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly the greatest influencer in the
world.

The yet
another match between France and Germany further made this EURO interesting.
With Hummels’ own goal 20 minutes into the game, the Frenchmen needn’t do much to win
over the Germans that day.
The Ultimate Death Game: Portugal vs. Germany
The Portugal vs. Germany face-off is one of the most anticipated matches in this EURO 2020 which is scheduled to kick
off on 19 June 2021 at Football Arena Munich at 1800 CET. Portugal is the
defending EURO Champion. At the same time, Germany won the World Cup 2014. (We’d
never forget the day Germans destroyed Brazil.)
Quick Recap: Portugal already
stands tall in the Group F win 3-0 win over Hungary from its opening match.
However, Germany is in a vulnerable position as they need this win to survive
through the Group of Death. Else, Germany will once again bid goodbye to the
EURO from the Group Stage, as they did in the World Cup 2018 in Russia.
Cristiano
Ronaldo is at the top of his game. So we expect him to keep it up against
Germany and later with France. With already a win against Hungary, Portugal is
relatively safe, for now. However, it’s certainly gonna be tough for the
Portuguese. They didn’t call it the “Group of Death” for no reason. Somebody’s
gotta go home, well at least two! Portugal and France already have a win each.
All they have to do is either win the next game or at least not lose!
What happens if Germany loses against Portugal?
Good
Question! Germany can’t afford to lose against Portugal unless they want to go
back home. But even if they lose against Portugal, it’s not the end of the
story. A big win over Hungary might earn Joachim Löw’s boys the ticket to the
next round. On the other side of the Group, we have to wait for the match
between France and Portugal. The defending World Cup and EURO Champions,
respectively. That’s gonna be yet another interesting game. That means Germany’s
fate is hanging on the nets of the goal post, literally.
What are the chances?
Portugal is definitely on fire.
Just look back to the impressive 3-0 win over Hungary in their opening group
match. The interesting thing is that all those three goals were scored in the
final six minutes of the game. You don’t know what happens until the final
whistle is blown.
Historically, Germany has won
most of its previous matches against Portugal. They have met 18 times before on
the ground. While the Germans stay strong with 10 wins, Portugal has only three
wins against them, with five games as a draw. But don’t let history fool you. Portugal
is the defending EURO Champion, and it’s not gonna be easy 90-minutes for Germany.
Germany has the talents like
Muller and Kross. But Portugal looks well drilled for finishing it strong at
the opponent’s fort. Chances are that the game might end as a draw. A defeat
for either team might earn them a ticket back home ASAP.
May the best team win!
