What happened on Euro 2020—France vs. Germany?

France can sit back and relax

France seems to have moved off to the Round of 16 even before the kickoff tonight. Frenchmen can just sit back and relax. But they won’t. If they make it as a winner of Group F, they are gonna have a relatively good time in their next Group of 16 match. The Les Bleus seem pretty confident this time, given they won their opening match against Germany by 1-0 last week. However, Didier Deschamps’s boys were awestruck when they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Hungary last Saturday. Portugal, on the other hand, made a remarkable opening with a 3-0 win against same Hungary. But call it the beauty of the game, Portugal lost the point to Germany by 2-4 goals on the same day. What a blitzkrieg comeback! Could it get any crazier?

World Champion vs. Euro Champion

People have started to make anticipation that the fate of Group F defines the fate of EURO 2020. And they can’t be more right, because it’s the faceoff between the defending World Champion vs. European Champion. France vs. Portugal. We would have happily waited until July 11 for this game, but no… fate had something else in mind and couldn’t wait for these two giants vying for the victory right away. And here we are.

You just can’t afford to miss this match. How often do the defending champs of the World Cup and Euro Cup end up in the same group? Well, not that often. France and Portugal have faced each other on various occasions, but not as the defending champs of the international football festival. It’s like Halley’s Comet made its appearance every 75-76 years. Even rarer than that! The point is: The Euro 2020—France vs. Portugal is the Game to Watch. Furthermore, Cristiano Ronaldo looks forward to setting the bar higher than ever! We don’t know which team will end up whereby the end of the day. France looks pretty confident, now that it has already made it to the next round. Cristiano Ronaldo’s real test lies in his ability to lead Portugal by making it with an honorable win over France. Germany seems to be back in business now that it has already played against France and Portugal. The game against Hungary won’t be that easy but, of course, they look forward to the next round by the end of the game today. With a loss and a draw, Hungary needs to do some hard work against Germany.

Learning from the Past

Portugal suffered a major pitfall in its defense during its match against Germany. The attacking front looks strong with Cristiano Ronaldo manning the boat which he proved within the first ten minutes against Joachim Löw’s boys. Out of the 13 meet-ups, France seems to have a higher hand with 12 wins and only one draw against Portugal. The last time Portugal won against France was during the EURO 2016. We all know what happened!

Germany is an all-time favorite team around the world. It has hardly missed the final days of the tournament except during Euro Cup 2000 and 2004, where it couldn’t make it beyond the Group Stage. But following the amazing comeback and win against Portugal, Löw’s boys have their spirit back again in the game. If everything goes their way, Germany might even finish off at the top of the Group of Death.
